Puppy Chronology:

3 Days Old

9/18/03: Today we decided to create this chronology of our observations of the pups and interesting events that are happening with them.  The pups are now 5 days old and continue to be very active.  Many of the bigger one's are making entire circumference tours of the whelping box, indicative of the strength and stamina they are gaining as they grow.  Their cries (when they are hungry or annoyed by the other pups, now seems to be getting deeper and more like the sound of a bark.  Today, Joan clipped the pups' little toenails so that they would not scratch Sophie's teats when nursing.   All the pups seem to be growing very fast each day.  "Milo", our nickname for the #1 Yellow pup, has already gained about 3/4 lb since he was born

9/22/03: Puppies are now 9 days old.  Most of the puppies are about 2x's their original size.  They all are very healthy and active.  It looks like the pups are very close to getting their eyes open as you can see their eyebrows moving and can tell their eyeballs are moving behind their lids.   Sophie is just about back to her regular figure and looking great.  They are nursing about once every hour and quickly move toward their momma when she enters the whelping box.

7 Days Old

9/26/03:  Walking Attempts are the big story today.  Several of the pups are getting up on their hind legs and seem to almost be standing up.  They are pushing themselves with both sets of legs and you can tell (see the Puppy Cam) that they are now becoming more mobile.   They are all very active and (if they are not sound asleep) they are making constant circuits of their whelping box when they are awake.  Some of the pups are also sleeping on their back with their leg straight out in the air!   This is starting to get real exciting as it becomes more and more fun to watch them when they are awake and see their comical antics (almost as funny as our big dogs).  Eyes are still not open although every morning we come down and examine each one of them very closely.  You can see a lot of movement behind their lids so it's going to be any day now.   Keep an eye on the cam, you might even see one of the walk or get their eyes open before we do!   Enjoy...more photos coming on Saturday...we've planned a big "puppy photo shoot"!

9/27/03: GREAT NEWS...On Friday about three puppies' Eyes were open, Saturday, it looks like there are 5 with open eyes.  You can see some of the open eyes in the photos above.  Most of the dogs are actually using their hind legs and trying to walk...check out Puppy Cam to see their progress!   The Puppies seem to be now aware of each other and are moving toward each other and licking and touching each other...they continue to be more and more active.  We can't wait until a few weeks when they will be fully aware of us in the room and their eyes will be focused on all the trouble they can get into.

10/5/03:  Lot of exciting things happening over the past few days so we haven't had much time to write until now.  All puppies are walking and running around their whelping box (see Puppy Cam for details).  They all see and hear very clearly now and react to sounds and motion around their box.  They have been stepping up over the pig rails to peer out of the box to see what's going on outside so soon we will have to take the rails off...for now, we have to put up the wooden gate at the entrance to the box to keep them in.  On Friday we started them on solid food (well its called Mash and its a combination of Powdered Baby Rice Cereal and Goat's Milk mixture).  We mix it in a very liquidy mix and put it in a pie plate.  They learn very quickly how to lap it up and have been actively expecting it before their morning and evening meals.  Of course they are an absolute mess after they have eaten and spend another 15 minutes licking it off each other in the process.  Sophie likes it too, so she's been helping us clean it off by licking each one of them.  We are using a wet towel and toweling each one off...of course they don't like getting cleaned.  All the pups now go #1 and #2 on their own now and don't need Sophie's help anymore.  Believe it or not, since we put down the newspaper on Friday for the Mash mess, they have been stepping onto the paper to do their "duty"!  Its as if they know the paper is where they need to go (actually, they think the paper is someplace other then their den and they naturally us it instead of messing in the "den").  Well, at least the first steps to house breaking have begun!.  We took a few of them out of the box for the first time and played with them for a while in the living room rug.  They just loved to explore and freely roamed under sofas, chairs and other dogs...its was fun watching them explore new uncharted territory.   They all are becoming very social and are playing and wrestling with each other very actively.   Biting muzzles, tails and any thing else that looks easy to grab onto has been pretty common over the past few days.  They are also teething a bit and we've seen a few of them try and bit the pip rail wood a few times trying to cut those tiny teeth hiding behind their gums...they should appear in a few more weeks, so we will keep an eye out for them soon.

28 Days Old

10/12/03:  Well Puppies are now acting just about like real dogs.  We've started putting them on the kitchen floor and letting them explore around.  At first they were nervous about the new type surface (tile) but after a while, it was fun as usual.  They have now explored just about every nook and cranny they can find.  Favorite places include Andy and Sophie's crate...unfortunately it's not been real pleasant when Andy is home and he has been caught growling at the intruders, but he's been scolded a few times.  Tennis balls seem to be the toy of preference and many of the pup have learned how to put it in their mouth and actually carry it around.  Fighting and wrestling is a big past-time and all of them are exhibiting their basic instincts and starting to show their pack dominance already.  Some of them actually seem to be responding to their nicknames and have already responded to the sharp word "No" when caught biting at our ankles.

35 Days Old

10/19/03: Puppies are now 5 weeks old today.   They have been given full run of the kitchen and have taken full control over exploring every inch and corner of the territory they now have to cover.  The continue to display many new personalities and traits that amaze and delight us.  Their antics and explorations are endless.
